CONFLICTS LOOMS AMID DROUGHT CONDITIONS

This is as a result of heightening dry conditions in the county. Most of recent past known big permanent rivers right now have been reduced to bare rocks leaving residents depending on them to wade through untold suffering.However these residents are not only associating the the situation with the current dry condition,but also to farming activities along these rivers upstream and that has gone unchecked.
According to these residents living downstrean,their neighbors upstream have redirected the rivers to their large tracts of lands for farming purposes using wide furrows that has left them with no water.Therefore these residents feel there is need for a immediate solution to be sought to avoid chaos since it does not add up when a few people benefit themselves as others suffer."It pains when we see a few characters enriching themselves at the expense of majority who are left with no water even for drinking"complained one resident."What bothers us most is realising even those blocking the water from reaching us have already piped water in their house holds while we who depends from the river are left suffering",observed onother resident.
For instance users of River Naka in Chuka Igambang'ombe subcounty Igambang'ombe ward, and who spoke to this source have issued threats to invade the farms under irrigation upstream to unblock the water by their own since even their elected leaders including their M.C.A Hon. Njeri has remained mum over the disaster."We cannot sit and watch as conditions worsen with few people get on enriching themselves as we suffer"they said.
Now the helples residents have been left at the mercy of water vendors who are sourcing water from surviving River Maara and Ruguti, and later supplying to them at a cost ranging from Ksh 30 depending with the distance and the quantity.Those in remote areas like Kiegoti are the most affected as the roads leading to them are poor and motorbike riders find it difficult to surply the scarce commodity in such areas.
Livestocks are not spared either.Animals are forced to quench their thirst from dirty and muddy ponds left in the dried rivers.This according to the residents is endangering the health of their animals which is their only hope.
As schools opens,the fate of pupils in these areas has been thrown into uncertainity since the schools have got no water for usage.Therefore parents especially from Tharaka and Igambang'ombe have urged the relevant county departments to rise up to the occasion and help them or otherwise the learning is likely to be paralyzed.
